Interest free loans up to £10,000 from the Scottish Government are available for owner occupiers in Scotland who want to install a domestic renewables system or who wish to connect to a district heating scheme powered from a renewable energy source.

What is on offer?
Interest free loans for the supply and installation of a domestic renewables system or connection to a renewably powered district heating scheme.
Renewables systems – Up to 75% of the total cost up to £10,000 can be borrowed for renewable systems.
District heating schemes – Up to 100% of the total cost up to £5,000 can be borrowed to connect to an approved district heating scheme.
The amount you can borrow depends on the technology being installed and you can choose your repayment period up to a maximum.
The loan scheme operates on a first-come first-served basis subject to the overall availability of loan funds.
Can I apply after installing a system?
No, you must not commence work before receiving a written offer of loan from us. You cannot apply retrospectively i.e. after work has been started on your renewables system or on your connection to a district heating scheme.
Who can apply?
Loans are available to owner occupiers in Scotland for residential existing buildings and new buildings under construction if the property is already owned by the intended owner occupier.

District heating schemes eligibility
Interest free loans of up to 100% of your costs up to £5,000 are available for connecting to an approved district heating scheme.
The district heating scheme you wish to connect to will need to be approved for support under the Home Energy Scotland renewables loan scheme. A list of approved district heating schemes will be made available on this page.
Which installers and products can I use?
Your chosen installer and the system being installed must be certified under the terms of the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).
A list of all products and installers certified under the scheme can be found on the Microgeneration Certification Scheme website.

How to apply for a loan

It exists to help people and is the only source of clear and impartial advice on making your home cheaper to heat and power.
An advisor from Home Energy Scotland will make sure that you are aware of all the support you could be eligible for, advise on what you can do to your property to make sure it is as energy efficient as possible, explain the rules of the loan scheme and the next steps for you to take.If you wish to proceed with a loan application the advisor will arrange for an application form to be sent to you. Only applications forms issued by us will be accepted.
Please complete the form and return it with all the required supporting information, to the address detailed on the form. What else will I need to do?
Required energy efficiency measures – To ensure you maximise the carbon dioxide reductions and the energy saved by installing a renewables system or connecting to district heating, you will be required to have a minimum level of energy efficiency measures in place in your home.
In all cases you will need to have a Green Deal Assessment carried out on your property and provide a copy of the Green Deal report with your claim.
